A rough second quarter spelled doom for the Reeths-Puffer girls basketball team in a 53-38 loss to East Kentwood in non-league action on Saturday night.

The Rockets led by one point, 13-12, after one quarter, but then were outscored 32-17 in a wild second quarter and fell behind for good.

There was no scoring at all in a strangely quiet third quarter, and R-P had a 9-8 edge in the fourth.

Reeths-Puffer's Irelyn Niklasch, who had five steals and five rebounds.

Brooklyn Tornes led R-P with 13 points, Sophia Hekkema added 10 and Ariel Walker totaled nine.

Hekkema snagged eight rebounds and Irelyn Niklasch had five. Niklasch had five steals and Hekkema had four.

"We need to get better on the defensive end of the floor and take care of the ball better offensively," said R-P Coach Rodney Walker. "East Kentwood did a great job of executing off our turnovers."

The Rockets will host Holland West Ottawa on Tuesday night.
