The Reeths-Puffer volleyball team’s Kill Combo – Madisyn Dykema and Sophia Hekkema – produced some notable results on Saturday at the Holland West Ottawa Invitational.

Dykema pounded home 20 kills and Hekkema had 19 as the Rockets split four matches on a very busy day.

R-P lost to West Ottawa (19-25, 18-25), beat Plainwell (25-18, 26-24), lost to Gull Lake (16-25, 18-25), then beat Kalamazoo Central (25-17, 25-9).

R-P Coach Justin Birr credited Hekkema for becoming more aggressive on the court and using her skills to pound home more points.

“After watching last Saturday’s film, Sophia made it her goal to swing more and tip less,” the coach said. “She was more aggressive and productive today, and that helped make our offense more of a threat.”

R-P's Sophia Hekkema (10) takes a shot in a match earlier this season.

Lauren Nelson and Allie McManus also chipped into the attack with eight and five kills, respectively.

Dykema also served six aces, McManus served five while Nelson, Hekkema and Megan Barmes had three apiece.

Barmes led the defense with 18 digs, Hekkema had 13 and Dykema had 11.

“Megan has embraced the role of libero and continues to learn and grow playing middle back defense,” Birr said.

Reeths-Puffer emerged from the day with a 9-8-2 record and will host Zeeland East on Tuesday in a key O-K Green conference match.
