The Reeths-Puffer volleyball team had a good night on its home court on Tuesday, winning two matches before falling in the third.

The Rockets came out hot, downing Ravenna 25-3, 25-23 and Ludington 25-18, 25-23.

The last match didn’t go so well, with R-P losing to Fruitport 25-19, 25-9,

R-P’s Madysyn Dykema had a strong night, leading the team with 20 kills. Billy Tryska added 15 kills while Sophie Hekkema had 10.

Emme Buzzell served well, getting five aces past the Rockets’ opponents.

Reeths-Puffer's Madysyn Dykema, who led the team in kills on Tuesday.

“The theme of the evening was consistency,” said Reeths-Puffer Coach Justin Birr. “In set 1 against Ravenna we were consistent with our serves, our defensive positioning and our attacks, and we won easily. In the second set we lost consistency and it nearly lost us.

“Against Ludington we stepped our consistency back up and beat a tall and talented team. We attacked smart and communicated well.”

Birr was not very happy about the third match against Fruitport, but said it gave his team a list of concerns to address.

“We were very inconsistent,” the coach said. “Give credit to Fruitport for executing its offense when they were in-system. Their setters looked good because their defense passed consistently good balls. Our passing and defense were inconsistent, we were not in-system, and it forced us to make bad choices setting and attacking.

“The good news is that we will have a lot to learn from watching film of our Fruitport match, and we will go to work in practice.”

The Rockets, now 3-3-2, will visit Muskegon on Sept. 8 in their first O-K Black conference match of the season.
