The Reeths-Puffer girls tennis team finally got the chance to play some Muskegon County competition on Tuesday and collected its second win of the season.

The Rockets, who started the season with six dual matches against some really good non-local opponents, took on North Muskegon and walked away with a 6-2 victory.

Reeths-Puffer improved to 2-3-2 on the season. The Rockets will return to action on April 14 with a home conference match against rival Mona Shores.

The Rockets dominated singles play, winning all four matches.

R-P's Hope Latsch, whose victory in a tiebreaker helped the team prevail.

Olivia Smith (No. 1 singles) and Mylie Neel (No. 4 singles) won their matches in straight sets.

Hope Latsch (No. 2) lost her first 7-6, but rallied to win the second 6-3 and the tiebreaker 11-9.

Molly Matz (No. 3) won her first set 6-3, lost the second by the same score, then won the tiebreaker 10-8.

The two tiebreaker wins proved to be valuable, because R-P and North Muskegon split the four doubles matches.

R-P's Molly Matz, who also won in a tiebreaker.

Doubles winners for the Rockets were Malania Eilers and Gabrielle Borgerson (No. 1) and Makayla Smith and Jayla Brink (No. 4). Both doubles teams won in straight sets.

"As a team it was great to finish out with a dual win over a local rival before spring break," said R-P Coach Ryan Hankinson.  "Yet many players struggled as the match progressed  and the (weather) conditions worsened. Kudos to North Muskegon for battling the whole match and remaining in contention.

"Molly Matz and Hope Latsch each won third set tiebreakers to achieve the 6-2 win and avoid what would have been a disappointing tie.

"Every girl now has a great opportunity to reflect on the seven matches they've played and identify specific areas to improve as we pick back our season the day they return against our biggest rival Mona Shores."
