The growing pains continue for the very young Reeths-Puffer girls basketball team.

The Rockets’ latest lesson came on Tuesday night, when they came out on the short end of a tough 73-27 score against Hudsonville in a non-conference home game.

Things went badly for the Rockets right away, when they fell behind 25-8 after one quarter.

Hudsonville outscored R-P 17-7 in the second quarter and led 43-15 at halftime, then lengthened its lead with a 19-6 advantage in the third quarter.

R-P Coach Rodney Walker said his team got off to a sluggish start and never recovered.

“Hudsonville did a good job of disrupting our offense,” Walker said. “We were not able to run any of our offensive sets. We also have to get better at transition defense. We have to get back to being more aggressive defensively in order to compete at a high level.”

R-P freshman Raquel Walker had 12 points, five rebounds and seven steals. Sophomore Ashlyn David snagged eight rebounds.

Josie Desmit led Hudsonville (2-1) with 20 points.

Reeths-Puffer, now 0-4 on the season, will host Grand Haven on Friday night.
