There’s a pretty good chance that last weekend’s visit to the Division 2 girls state golf finals probably won’t be the last for Reeths-Puffer’s Sophia McCollum.

The standout sophomore did very well competing against the best in Michigan, shooting a two-day score of 168 and finishing tied for 17th place out of 108 golfers.

McCollum was very good on Friday, shooting an 81 and tying for 13th place. She shot an 87 on the final 18 holes on Saturday.

The outing capped an breakout season for McCollum, who finished fourth individually in the O-K Green conference championship tournament, won the championship at the GMAA City Tournament and finished sixth at regionals to qualify for the state finals.

“I am very proud of Sophia,” said R-P Coach Matt Pallett. “She was one of just a few underclassmen to make it to the state finals as an individual.

“She had a great year and gained a lot of experience this weekend. She played very well in stretches. I am looking forward to seeing how she progresses over the next two years.”
