The Reeths-Puffer volleyball team is more than ready for some local competition after struggling against some very strong opponents in the O-K Green conference.

That will come on Saturday when the Rockets will host the annual Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Tournament.

For the Rockets, it will be a chance to forget about a recent streak against conference competition that has left them with a 1-6 record in the O-K Green.

The team’s frustration has been compounded by injuries that have knocked out two top players.

On Tuesday the Rockets fell to a good Caledonia squad 3-0. The set scores were 10-25, 12-25, 10-25.

Alissa Klopp and Hannah Lindstrom led Reeths-Puffer with six and three kills, respectively. Maddie Dyer had five digs and three aces.

On Thursday R-P fell to Mona Shores 3-0. The set scores were 6-25, 17-25, 14-25.

Klopp had eight kills and Dyer had 19 assists. Defensively, Carlee Brown had 13 digs and Dyer had nine.

R-P Coach Justin Birr said Saturday’s city tournament will be a welcome opportunity for his players to test themselves against different opponents.

“The conference schedule is brutal,” he said. “The top four teams are state-ranked or honorable mention. It’s hard getting beat 25-12.

“When you look around the city tournament, Mona Shores and Fruitport are probably one and two, and on their own level, but the rest of the tournament is pretty wide open. We feel like we can beat any of the other teams on a good day.”
