The singles players on the Reeths-Puffer boys tennis team are really starting to come along, and it showed in a pair of matches this week.
On Wednesday, three of the four singles players registered wins, helping the Rockets salvage a 4-4 tie against Caledonia in an O-K Green conference battle.
Ethan Frang (No. 1 singles) defeated Caledonia’s Colin Martin, 6-3, 6-2, Quinn Alderink (No. 2 singles) swept past Garrett Fales 6-3, 6-1, and Cory Judd (No. 3 singles) beat Hudsen Derengowski 6-4, 6-4.
The trouble came in doubles, where R-P lost three of four matches.
R-P's No. 1 doubles team of Holden Earnest and Trent VanDam posted the only win and had to fight for it. They lost the first set 6-7, then won the second 6-0 and the third 6-1.
R-P's Ethan Frang, who won both of his No. 1 singles matches in straight sets this week.
The singles players continued their dominance on Thursday, sweeping all four matches in a non-conference clash with Whitehall.
They provided the edge in a 5-3 Reeths-Puffer victory.
Frang swept Ryne Nicholas 6-0, 6-0, Alderink fought hard to beat Brady Tate 7-6, 2-6, 10-5, Judd had a similar battle and downed Evan Schuitema 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, and Adam Miller (No. 4 singles) downed Cameron Cook 6-0, 6-2.
R-P’s lone victory in doubles came at No. 3, where Jackson Baldus and Leo Kretschmar outlasted Whitehall’s tandem, 6-7, 6-2, 10-7.
“Singles were excellent both days," said R-P Coach Ryan Hankinson. "Our lower doubles flights played amazing against Whitehall, which is the strength of their team. All three went to tiebreakers and three doubles got the all-important win that got us the overall victory.
“I left Whitehall late last night very proud of the entire team, regarding how they played, supported one another, and the sportsmanship displayed in some adverse conditions.”
