The Reeths-Puffer girls golf team competed in the inaugural East versus West Showdown at the Muskegon County Club on Monday and performed well, with and against a lot of good players

The event featured six teams from the west side of the state and six from the east, pitted against each other.

R-P joined Mona Shores, Spring Lake, Caledonia, Lowell and Traverse City Central on the West team. Mason, Dexter, Ann Arbor Huron, Ann Arbor Pioneer, Ann Arbor Skyline and Grand Ledge comprised the East team.

The Rockets helped the West team win the unique event by a score of 328.5-319.5.

“This was a great event," said R-P head coach Matt Pallett. "Big shout out to Joe Latz (Mona Shores head coach) and Stephany Pawlowski (head golf pro at Muskegon Country Club) for putting this all together.”

The tournament also had a traditional high school format, with teams and individuals competing for top honors.

Reeths-Puffer finished eighth out of 12 teams in the tough field with 392 points. Caledonia won with a score of 363.

R-P sophomore Sophia McCollum had another very good day, shooting an 85 and finishing eighth overall in the individual standings. She shot three birdies and a one-over-par 38 on the back nine.

Ella Voorhies

“Sophia had a very strong day,” Pallett said. “She didn’t get off to the best of starts but really put a great stretch of golf together. Her mental toughness keeps improving.”

Rowan Bluhm shot a 93 for the Rockets with seven pars. Olivia Ambler and Ella Voorhies each shot a 107 while Emma Dvorak shot a 150.

Voorhies had the best round of her varsity career so far and caught Pallett’s attention.

”I am very happy for Ella Voorhies,” the coach said. “She continues to work hard and has a great attitude.”

The Rockets will continue their busy schedule by competing in the Whitehall Invitational on Wednesday.
