Reeths-Puffer cross country runners Jersi Bilek and Gabrielle Chevez opened their season in style on Tuesday, finishing in the top two spots individually at the Fruitport Calvary Christian Invitational.

Bilek, a junior, won the girls race with a time of 21:19. It was the first individual title of her varsity career.

Chevez, a sophomore, finished second with a mark of 22:10.

The Rockets placed five runners in the top 21, helping the team come within an eyelash of winning the event.

R-P finished in second place with 39 points, just one point behind first-place Fruitport. Mona Shores was third with 43 points in the tight three-way competition.

Reeths-Puffer’s Adrienne Fluette finished 10th with a time of 23:56, teammate Darcy Keete was 11th with a time of 24:50, Hope Latsch took 15th place with a 24:50 mark, Charli Belinger was 20th with a time of 26:54 and Kaitlyn Durow was 21st with a mark of 27:15.

Bilek, Chevez and Fluette received medals for their top 10 finishes.

“Jersi took the lead before the first mile and then it was like she hit cruise control,” said R-P head coach Lindsay Keefe. “Gabrielle had a great first race of the season with consistent miles. Adrienne ran an outstanding race with very good pacing.”
