The Reeths-Puffer softball team was bound to lose sooner or later, and it happened against another great team.
The Rockets traveled to Hudsonville on Wednesday night and dropped both games of a doubleheader.
R-P is now 20-2-1 on the season. The Rockets will next compete on Saturday in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Tournament.
Hudsonville improved to a perfect 15-0, according to MHSAA records.
The first game was close, with the Rockets falling 2-0.
R-P's Kyleigh Bilek, who had three hits in the doubleheader.
Hudsonville scored a single run in the first and third inning, and the Rockets were held to five hits.
Kyleigh Bilek had a double and a single for R-P while Megan Barmes, Lainey McDaniel and Kaylee Jones each collected a single.
McDaniel took the tough luck loss on the mound, pitching a complete game with eight strikeouts.
The second game was not nearly as close, with Hudsonville beating the Rockets 15-5.
R-P led 5-2 midway through the fourth inning, then the Eagles exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning and took control of the game.
Reeths-Puffer again only managed five hits, all singles from Barmes, McDaniel, Bilek, Natalie Kunnen and Aubrey Clark.
“Hudsonville is a fundamentally sound team and has been for a long time,” said R-P Coach Sarah Bayle. “We played a great first game with sound defense and only one earned run. However, we couldn't quite overcome at the plate and string hits together when we needed to.
“To think about the fact that Game 1 was a 2-0 ballgame, and if you take away the unearned runs in Game 2, it would've been a 5-5 ballgame, we are confident as a team and a coaching staff that we have the ability to beat anyone. I'm proud of these girls and I'm looking forward to the spark moving into Saturday.”
