Reeths-Puffer distance runner Sophia McCollum must have felt at least a little bit like a winner on Thursday, despite the girls track team’s narrow loss to Holland in an O-K Green conference meet.
The freshman took first place in two individual events and was part of two first-place relay teams in the Rockets’ 66-62 loss.
McCollum won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:44 and the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:06.
She teamed with Adrienne Fluette, Amani Starr and Melana Johnson to win the 4 x 400-meter relay (4:42.94) and Gabrielle Chevez, Fluette and Darcy Keete in the 4 x 800-meter relay (11:57.72).

Several other Rockets also won their events in the close meet, where a slightly different outcome in an event or two might have equaled a team victory.
Others taking first were Keete in the 400-meter run (1:08.34), Chevez in the 3,200-meter run (13:08), Zaire Wright in the shot put (25-9.5), Isabella Smith in the pole vault (8-0), and Brooklynn Tornes in the long jump (14-9.25).
The 4 x 100-meter relay team of Johnson, Tornes, Madilynn Smith and Starr (52.51) also took first.
Several other R-P athletes finished high in their events and won points for the team, including Tornes (second place in the 100-meter dash, third in the 200), Ma’Kaia Riley-McGuffey (second in the 400-meter run), Fluette (second in the 1,600-meter run) and Madilynn Smith (third in the 3,200-meter run, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles),
Reeths-Puffer’s 4 x 200-meter relay team of Savannah Lockwood, Riley-McGuffey, Kamari Walker and Azzy Gordon finished second.
