Tuesday’s victory was not just another win for the Reeths-Puffer girls basketball team.
After starting the season 0-5, the Rockets reeled off four straight wins before finally losing a tough one at Wyoming last Friday.
By bouncing back and beating Zeeland East 57-42 on the road on Tuesday, the Rockets showed that their improved play is for real and they are determined to remain in the O-K Green conference championship race.
R-P is now 5-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference standings. Wyoming leads the league with a 6-0 record while Muskegon is 5-0.
R-P's Brooklynn Tornes
“The girls were really hurt after the Wyoming loss,” said R-P Coach Rodney Walker. “They did a great job focusing in at practice and taking accountability for themselves to fix the things that didn’t go well in the game.”
The Rockets led 15-12 after one quarter and 27-25 at halftime. They took control with a 13-5 edge in the third quarter and a 17-12 advantage in the fourth.
Brooklynn Tornes led R-P with 20 points, including seven from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. She also had 10 assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Savannah Lockwood added 12 points for the Rockets on 4-for-4 shooting from three-point range. Irelyn Niklasch added nine points and 10 rebounds.
“Brooklynn did a great job of getting her teammates the ball to knock down shots,” Coach Walker said. “The team focus was on another level because they are starting to believe in each other.”
