R-P tennis players

Reeths-Puffer tennis player Olivia Harris continued her perfect April with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Zeeland East’s Anna Steenwyk on Monday.

Harris is now 10-0 in April and 10-2 on the season. Her win avenged a loss to Steenwyk at a tournament in March.

That victory was one of two highlights on an otherwise tough day for the R-P girls tennis team, which lost to Zeeland East 6-2 for its first O-K Green conference defeat of the season. The Rockets, who have been playing well across the board in recent weeks, lost six matches by straight sets.

The second bright spot was the play of R-P’s No. 1 doubles team, Ali Jakobi and Emily Champoux, who rallied to defeat Zeeland East’s Elise Jackson and ThyAn Kleikamp 4-6-6-4, 7-5 in a three-hour match.

“They put one of their best performances together,” R-P Coach Ryan Hankinson said about Jakobi and Champoux. “They can compete with anyone but have struggled with consistency early in the season.”

The Rockets have a busy week ahead of them, playing Zeeland West on Wednesday, Grand Rapids Union on Thursday and multiple opponents at Fruitport High School on Saturday.
